Liquid Staking Tokens: Balances and Exchange Rates
Model liquid-staking exposure using token quantity and protocol conversion rules, without assuming every reward appears as a transfer to the wallet.

Overview
When translating these concepts into an integration, keep the scope described by the wallet history api with the result. The examples in wallet transaction history and smart contract event logs show how the same distinction affects neighbouring data questions.
Liquid-staking designs can represent rewards through changing balances, changing conversion rates or other accounting mechanisms. A ticker is not enough to choose the correct historical model.
Identify the reward representation
Some designs rebase the holder’s visible balance. Others keep token quantity comparatively stable while the claim on an underlying asset changes. Redemption timing and secondary-market price introduce further distinctions. Keep token balance, protocol conversion and market price as separate observations.
Worked example: stable units, larger claim
A wallet holds ten derivative units. A protocol conversion changes from one underlying unit per token to 1.02, giving an estimated claim of 10.2 underlying units. The wallet did not necessarily receive 0.2 new derivative tokens. A transfer-only rewards report can therefore miss the mechanism.
Preserve redemption context
Record the selected block, conversion method and protocol version. Test pending withdrawals, fees and a market price that differs from protocol conversion value. Do not equate an estimated underlying claim with an immediately executable cash value. Keep the evidence technical; accounting or tax classification belongs to a separately defined policy.
A practical acceptance test
Test a constant derivative-token balance with a changing underlying conversion, then a rebasing-style fixture with a changing token balance. The parser must use the mechanism selected for each asset rather than one global rewards formula. Add a secondary-market discount and ensure market value remains distinct from protocol claim value and immediate redemption availability.
Questions about the topic
Frequently asked questions
Do all liquid-staking tokens rebase?
No. Designs use different balance and conversion mechanisms.
Is protocol conversion identical to market price?
No. They answer different questions and can diverge.
