Base Volume vs Quote Volume in Crypto Candles

Define trading-volume units correctly, calculate base and quote turnover separately, and avoid summing incompatible quantities across markets.

Overview

When translating these concepts into an integration, keep the scope described by the wallet history api with the result. The examples in wallet transaction history and smart contract event logs show how the same distinction affects neighbouring data questions.

Volume needs a unit as much as price does. Base volume measures the traded quantity of the base asset; quote volume measures the corresponding quote consideration under the selected trade model.

Preserve both sides of each trade

For each qualifying execution, retain exact base quantity and quote quantity. Deriving quote volume from a rounded candle close multiplied by total base volume usually loses information about prices within the interval. If multiple quote currencies are combined, an explicit conversion method is required.

Worked example: varying execution prices

Two trades each exchange one base unit, at ten and twenty quote units. Base volume is two and quote volume is thirty. Multiplying base volume by the closing price of twenty produces forty, which is not the observed quote turnover. Aggregate the original consideration amounts instead.

Define directional and gross conventions

Specify whether volume counts each executed trade once and how routed or bundled execution is handled. Test reversed pairs, fees and a trade with several token movements. Label normalised fiat-equivalent turnover as a derived metric with its own price observations. Never append a currency symbol to an untyped sum and assume the underlying units now match.

A practical acceptance test

Use two one-unit trades at ten and twenty quote units. Assert base volume two and quote volume thirty, not forty from multiplying the close by base volume. Reverse the pair and verify the unit labels change consistently. A cross-market total should reject incompatible quote units unless an explicit conversion method supplies the common denominator.

Questions about the topic

Frequently asked questions

Can close price times base volume replace quote volume?

Not generally; execution prices can vary within the candle.

Can volumes from different quote assets be added directly?

No. They require a declared common-unit conversion.
